Jamestown is a town located in Newport County in Rhode Island. Situated on Conanicut Island- the second largest island on Narragansett Bay, the coastal city also includes Gould Island and the secluded Dutch Island in its territory.
The coastal town lies 25 miles from Providence and connects Rhode island to Aquidneck island in Narragansett Bay.
In 2020, the town had an estimated population of 5,559, with a median age of 56.3.
The city, ranked one of America’s wealthiest towns, is known for its rich historic 18th-century architecture.
Jamestown was originally settled in 1678 as part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and was later incorporated in Rhode Island in 1746.
Named in honor of James, Duke of York, Jamestown was home to the British fleet during the American Revolution. The British destroyed the forts and burned down the Beavertail Lighthouse- Rhode Island’s notable historic lighthouse before leaving Narragansett Bay in 1779.
Later the forts were again re-established during World War I and II when the area became home to several military bases.
Jamestown attracts a wide variety of people thanks to its coastal location, fantastic scenery, low population density, and rich cultural history. Of the 2,387 households in the town, family establishments comprise 71.81% of the Jamestown households making it one of the most family-friendly places to live.
Ranked as one of the best places to retire in Rhode Island, the quaint little coastal town with its rural feel and colonial-style wooden houses has most residents owning their homes.
Jamestown has dense suburbs dotted with parks, bars, and award-winning restaurants. It is also known for its highly-rated public schools.
Jamestown’s cost of living is 58.1% higher than the national average compared to the rest of the country.
With a flourishing job market and a lower crime rate, Jamestown is one of the best places to live in Rhode Island.
Thanks to its family-friendly location and proximity to excellent public schools, entertainment, and workplaces, Jamestown has 86% homeownership, with the majority buying detached single homes.
The average price of homes in Jamestown is $7,92,400, with a sales price of $552 per square foot, which is higher than most other towns in the region.
Jamestown being a coastal town, has a high risk for storm-related hazards.
